However, there are downsides to going online.<\/p>\n<p>The same people inhabit both the online and offline worlds, which means conflicts are inevitable. Traditional bullying now appears on the Internet, where some take pleasure in humiliating others.<\/p>\n<p>This phenomenon is called <strong>cyberbullying<\/strong>, and the effects of cyberbullying on people, especially young adults, are enormous.<\/p>\n<p>So how is cyberbullying different from real-world bullying? What are the effects of cyberbullying? All forms of cyberbullying can cause psychological trauma to the victim.<\/p>\n<p>Cyberbullying can take the following two forms:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Public<\/strong>: In the presence of \u201cviewers\u201d, for example, during a discussion on social media posts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personal<\/strong>: Insults come through private or direct messages.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"highlight_PastelGreen\">It is important to note that cyberbullying is a long and systematic process. A single unflattering or angry comment cannot be considered bullying.<\/p>\n<p>The cyberbullying process involves several types of people: the aggressor, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the victim, and the witness.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The Aggressor<\/strong><strong>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person who attacks the victim. By <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">utilizing the Internet&#8217;s resources, an aggressor can hide behind multiple<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accounts. Some gather accomplices, which increases the amount of harm done to the victim. The concept of staying anonymous encourages <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attackers to take on more than they could <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in real life.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Victim: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any person can become a victim of cyberbullying<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also known as cyber victimization).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In fact, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a large<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> number of people have experienced this phenomenon online. According to the data, today, a staggering 1 in 3 teenagers have experienced cyberbullying, and 25% of children have faced repetitive bullying.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>The Witness<\/strong>: <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even without being an aggressor or victim, cyberbullying can often be spotted on the Internet by a witness. Witnesses can take one of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> three sides by helping the aggressor, protecting the victim, or standing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aside.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who becomes the aggressor and the victim? As a rule, <\/span><b>middle and high school students are more likely to encounter cyberbullying<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Teens <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">often lack the ability to express their feelings and emotions effectively, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which can lead them to release aggression online. However, the catalyst for putting work into action is the anonymity and the permissiveness of the Internet environment.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the aggressors may have been initially <strong>afraid to be among the victims,<\/strong> and therefore, they\u2019ve made the decision to attack first. This often happens to witnesses of bullying. By humiliating other people and saying hurtful or demeaning things, they intend to join a stronger group or even lead it.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This dynamic parallels traditional bullying, including social exclusion tactics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Revenge <\/strong>is also a frequent trigger for cyberattacks. An offended friend, partner, ex-boyfriend, or girlfriend may initiate bullying to avenge their own grievances, real or imaginary. Previously close relationships with people allowed bullies to learn a lot of personal information about the victim, which worsens the situation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Representatives of other cultures and nationalities<\/strong> are often the objects of ridicule. The effects of cyberbullying go beyond emotional distress; it can trigger severe outcomes like suicidal ideation and self-harm.<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Online Gaming Communities:<\/strong> Online gaming platforms, where young adults often spend substantial time, can unfortunately become hotspots for cyberbullying. The competitive nature of gaming sometimes leads to hurtful interactions that impact mental health.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Educational Platforms and Forums:<\/strong> Even educational spaces aren&#8217;t immune. Forums and online platforms designed for learning can inadvertently host instances of cyberbullying, affecting students&#8217; concentration and emotional well-being.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Messaging Apps and Group Chats:<\/strong> Cyberbullying can transcend social media sites and seep into private messaging apps and group chats. The slight changes in behavior a cyberbullied child shows are crucial to their mental health and social well-being. <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such behavioral changes often include emotional withdrawal, irritability, and signs of expressive suppression\u2014when teens hide their feelings instead of talking about them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other common signs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: left; width: 100%;\">\n<li>Dropping grades<\/li>\n<li>Avoiding friends or social engagements<\/li>\n<li>Starting to skip school<\/li>\n<li>Hiding their device from adults and others<\/li>\n<li>Appearing angry when looking at a device<\/li>\n<li>Using alcohol or abusing drugs<\/li>\n<li>Mentioning suicide, suicide attempts, or suicidal <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ideation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While picking up on these changes doesn\u2019t mean a child is being cyberbullied, it\u2019s better to err on the side of caution.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compared with traditional bullying at school, online bullying can follow the child home and intensify feelings of social exclusion. Over time, this emotional pressure can increase anxiety, expressive suppression, and even suicidal ideation in vulnerable teens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u0410 <a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2018\/04\/180419130923.htm\"\" rel=\"nofollow\">2018 study published by Swansea University<\/a>\u00a0reveals that \u201cChildren and young people under 25 who are victims of cyberbullying are more than twice as likely to self-harm and enact suicidal behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With such clear and significant effects on a child\u2019s mental health and social well-being, it\u2019s clear that significant damage is inflicted on the victims of cyberbullying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"highlight_PastelGreen\">Negative effects are reflected not only on the victims. Witnesses are also traumatized when placed in a conflict environment. Most children are forced to take the position of aggressor in order not to become a victim. If a \u201cdefender\u201d appears in the group, then they have to withstand colossal pressure from the aggressive majority.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, cyberbullying most often begins in a school environment. Beyond social media sites, cyberbullying pervades various online platforms, magnifying its impact. The consequences of cyberbullying can be grave, often leading to significant mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and even suicidal thoughts. The cyberbullying victimization experienced by young adults can propel them into a distressing cycle of self-doubt and emotional turmoil.<\/p>\n<h3>\u0422rolling<\/h3>\n<p>It is not exactly bullying, but rather a kind of \u201ctough challenge\u201d and a \u201ccompetition\u201d in humor. As a rule, the troll does not care with whom and for how long to \u201ccompete\u201d. If a more witty remark comes in response, or if the comment is completely ignored, the &#8220;humorist&#8221; will go elsewhere in pursuit of appreciation and recognition.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, <\/span><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/379997\/internet-trolling-digital-media\/\"\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statistica revealed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that 38% of 1,020 respondents see trolling daily. The negative effects of cyberbullying victimization via trolling include low self-esteem, as most people who get trolled suffer from a lack of confidence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> way to handle trolling is to ignore it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Most of the time, trolls want you to engage, so don\u2019t give them the satisfaction!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Flaming<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is also not harassment yet. It is a single outburst of anger towards a perso<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">n, expressed through<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an offensive comment or harsh criticism. As a rule, the authors of such rude messages do not <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">require a response<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">express their reaction to a specific product (such as a post, an article, a video, or a photo) and then <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">move on, forgetting about your existence immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flaming isn\u2019t as common as cyberbullying among young adults. According to research by the <\/span><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jahonline.org\/article\/S1054-139X(14)00758-7\/pdf\"\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of Adolescent Health<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> less than 5% of students report cyberbullying as an \u201cisolated incident.\u201d However, one of the negative effects of flaming is that when children spend more time online, they\u2019re more likely to start using flaming themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Hating<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online hating typically attacks the things a person can\u2019t change about themselves, like race, gender, religion, disability, or sexual orientation. <\/span><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.esafety.gov.au\/research\/young-people-social-cohesion\/online-hate-bullying-violence\"\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statistics show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that over 50% of young adults see or hear hateful comments online.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The negative effect of online hate is exhaustion, and it can lead to anxiety and depression. The best thing to do when a victim of online hate, or if you see online hate, is to report it to the online platform, website, app, or game. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Harassment<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_20344\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20344\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-20344\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-blog.findmykids.org\/2021\/05\/kiberbulling-8.jpg\" alt=\"how is cyberbullying real\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20344\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prostock-studio\/Shutterstock.com<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This is bullying with clear sexual connotations. The person begins to receive messages with photographs and videos of a sexual nature, as well as inappropriate calls and messages. It can take place as a form of revenge, in which an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend begins to threaten to upload photographic or video files of an intimate nature of the victim, for everyone to see.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research by the <\/span><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/2021\/01\/13\/the-state-of-online-harassment\/\"\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pew Research Center revealed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that four out of ten people in the United States experience online harassment. Half of this group stated they believe politics is why they received online harassment. The negative effect of online harassment is trauma, with symptoms related to post-traumatic stress disorder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When being harassed online, it\u2019s best to block, mute, and report the individual.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Defamation (dissing)<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the dissemination of inaccurate information and rumors about the victim <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to causes <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maximum damage to their reputation. Fake chats and photoshopped images, and posts with distorted <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">details<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can all be created for this purpose.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/internet\/fact-sheet\/social-media\/\"\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase in social media usage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from 2005 (5%) to 2021 (75%) has greatly increased the risk of online defamation. Unfortunately, the negative effects of online defamation can completely ruin a person\u2019s reputation to the point where they cannot find a job.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To handle online defamation, it\u2019s best to do nothing, collect as much evidence as possible, and in some cases, hire a lawyer.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Identity theft<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This type of cyberbullying occurs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">through hacking the user\u2019s page or creating a copy of it and spreading negative, false information. Offensive messages may also be sent to friends, teachers (in the case of schoolchildren), etc, on behalf of the victim.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a  rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/identitytheft.org\/statistics\/\"\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Council on Identity Theft Protection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently revealed that it received 1.4 million identity theft cases in 2023.
