The word \u201cbrat\u201d means, traditionally, an unruly, badly behaved, spoiled, and selfish child who expects to get everything they want. Brats usually act in a defiant and rude manner. The term dates back centuries, and is likely linked to the Old English term \u201cbratt\u201d which means \u201ca cloak of coarse cloth.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today, \u201cbrat\u201d is used in modern slang as a compliment, describing a person (usually a teenage girl or a woman) who behaves confidently, unapologetically, and playfully and enjoys a bold, fun, and carefree lifestyle. Whereas the previous definition of the word related to children, the word can now be applied to people of all ages.<\/p>\n
The singer Charli XCX played a major role in the \u201cbrat\u201d rebrand. Her recent album (titled \u201cBrat\u201d), talks about a brat as someone who may be a little volatile but is authentic, honest, and parties through her troubles. The word has moved so far from its original dictionary definition that former presidential candidate Kamal Harris gave her website a \u201cbrat\u201d rebrand in a bid to attract younger voters to her cause.<\/p>\n
